Xyber V1.0.0
Xyber V1.0.0 is now ready to release.
You can download Xyber (342MB) here. Download available until 20th September 2009.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install Xyber. Instructions are in Quotes.
If your computer's native system is XP:
Here you will need to create a new partition.
Once the partition has been created, close all windows.
Now you will need to download and install ISO Recorder to burn Xyber to your CD-R.
If you are installing Xyber on this computer, it is recommended to print out the following instructions.
Insert the disk and reboot your computer. The computer should automatically boot from the CD. At the splash screen select Xyber. The Linux kernel will load.
Next you will see a black screen with lots of writing on it. This is not an error, this is the Live CD initializing. Watch this screen carefully for any errors; if there are any errors, email me with the details.
The initializing can take some time, depending on your disk speed and hard drive, so just be patient. If the computer looks like it's doing nothing, wait (This generally occurs when initialization gets to "Running sax2 to generate X configuration". The screen may also flicker at this point). If there is an error, the computer will reboot automatically.
After a while, the License Agreement page will appear. Read through it and then click accept and then Next. At this point the computer will detect network devices and start up Xyber.
At the login screen, type "root" at the username and leave the password field blank.
When Xyber is fully booted, double-click Live Installer.
YaST will detect how much RAM your computer has. If you have less than 1GB a message will pop up. Please click Continue.
An error will pop up: "Cannot read license file", click OK.
Select your language and keyboard layout, click I Agree to the License Terms and then click Next.
Select your time zone and click Next.
If you created the logical drive correctly back in XP, the next screen should say:
If the box says the above, click Next.
If the box says "Delete WINDOWS partition" then you have not created the logical drive correctly. Please boot back into Windows and create the logical drive.
In the next screen, enter your full name, your username and the password you want.
Make sure
are all ticked.
Click Next.
YaST will now analyse your system. Quickly look over the analysis to check everything is ok. If it is, click Install.
YaST will ask you to confirm installation. If you are happy to go ahead, click Install.
YaST will now install Xyber onto your computer. This may take some time, please be patient.
When complete, Click OK on the pop-up, click Computer, Shutdown and then Shut Down in the dialog. When the console reaches "Skipped services in runlevel 0:", turn off the computer by holding down the power button, then turn the computer back on. At this point, eject the CD.
The computer will boot back into Linux without prompting you, this is normal.
Wait for Xyber to start up; this may take a few minutes. Let the automatic configuration run, again this may take some time; it may prompt you to allow it to "probe your graphics card", DO NOT CLICK STOP, this is normal. X11 Configuration may need to switch to the console to detect your graphics card properly.
Xyber will automatically log you in.
Hoorah! If you have got to this point, Xyber has installed correctly!
NOTE: There is a problem with USB WiFi adaptors at the moment, this will be fixed in a later update.
NOTE: In Nautilus, you cannot access "C", "Network", or "Computer". This is normal. This will be fixed in a a later update.
NOTE: USB devices cannot be detected. This will be fixed in a later update.
If you decide you don't want Xyber anymore, boot to XP, go to Disk Management and delete the Unknown Partitions.
Next time you boot your computer, you will be presented a list of boot options. To boot Xyber, select Xyber, to boot to another operating system, select it from the list.
Have fun, and enjoy Xyber!
